A Plea for Modesty

Having come of age in the 1970s—an era of “free love” and radical disinhibition—I am not easily shocked, nor particularly prudish. But last summer at the beach was a bit surprising, if not shocking. I was amazed at how revealing many women’s bathing suits were; I’ve since learned that these are “thong bikinis.” Having thought that thongs were a type of underwear it seemed to me that women are now going about in their underwear. And yes, they’ve been doing this for a while (the “bra and blazer” outfit dates to at least the 1990s). Areas of our bodies which previously were kept hidden (and still are in some societies) are now displayed without shame. We have seemingly arrived at a point in time where the distinction between high fashion and seminudity are difficult to discern. There is a reason why one of the first stories in the Bible is of Adam and Eve discovering their nakedness and seeking to cover it up. Innocent babes need not cover their nakedness (perhaps harking back to the primeval time in the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve were unashamedly naked), but as we grow up and develop “secondary sexual characteristics” perhaps we should keep certain parts covered. Ask yourself: would you wear this to church? Of course, the beach and church call for different styles of dress, and yet even the beach could use a bit more modesty.
