SHARPSVILLE — Tri-Central’s varsity baseball team opened its season last week and went 2-3.The Trojans opened with back-to-back Hoosier Heartland Conference losses to Carroll (11-0) last Tuesday and Delphi (17-4) last Wednesday, but ended the week by winning two of their last three games.

LAFAYETTE — Tipton’s varsity baseball team opened its season against possibly the best team on its schedule, and the game did not go well for the Blue Devils.Lafayette Central Catholic pounded out 14 hits, drew nine walks and took advantage of six Tipton errors to record a 23-3, 5-inning rout over the Blue Devils here on Monday night.The Knights led 5-0 after the first inning, 10-1 after two innings and 19-1 at the end of the third inning.

The past two seasons, Tipton’s Nolan Swan, Grady Carpenter and Jackson Money were tabbed as ‘The Big 3.’ On Friday, the trio earned all-state honors from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.Swan and Carpenter were named to the senior and underclassman small school all-state teams, respectively, while Money was honorable mention senior all-state.Swan averaged team-highs of 19.6 points and 3.0 steals per game, while his 3.9 rebounds per game was third on the team and his 3.8 assists per game was second.Carpenter led the Blue Devils in rebounds (7.3 per game) and assists (8 per game), while scoring 17.7 points a game, which was second on the team as were his 1.8 steals per game.Money was third on the team in scoring (12.7 ppg), rebounding (3.0 rpg) and assists (1.3 apg).
