KEMPTON – Cora Elizabeth Burton, 98, of Kempton, passed away at 9:02 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at IU Health Tipton Hospital.
Born June 13, 1924, on Friday the 13th, on the farm where she lived all her life, she was the sixth daughter of Asa Temple and Stella Eve (Orr) Crail. On Dec. 28, 1948, she married Junior Dale Burton, in the Liberty Baptist Church and he preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 2019. They were the parents of four sons, Roger, Jerry, Joseph and Matthew.
Elizabeth graduated from Prairie High School in 1942 and attended Indiana Business College. She was active in her early years in the 4-H Prairie Club with her sewing skills, representing the county in state exhibitions. She was always active in community service and always willing to volunteer.
She was a charter member of Tri-Add Extension Homemakers and a member of Liberty Baptist Church, where she spent many years as president of the Missionary Society. She was active in the Prairie Alumni Association, a life member of the Greentown Glass Association and a life member of the Kokomo Chapter D.A.V. She was a 65-year active member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kempton, Tipton and Russiaville. In 1961, she was appointed district deputy of O.E.S in Indiana, representing District #10.
She served as Tipton County Century Farm Chairman for 21 years. Elizabeth was an avid sewer, making countless casserole carriers, baby blankets, clowns and other items. She was employed for 68 years as a correspondent of The Tipton County Tribune.
Survivors include her sons, Jerry Lee Burton of Kokomo, Joseph Scott Burton of Mason, Ohio, and Matthew Lynn (Starr) Burton of Kokomo; grandchildren, Sonja Burton of Kempton, Brittnee (Aaron) Smith of Kokomo, Carter Burton of Whiteland, Austin (Summer) Burton of Kokomo and Spenser Burton of Whiteland; many great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son, Roger Burton; granddaughter, Lisha Young; and her sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2023, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., in Russiaville, with Pastor Jeff Harlow officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with Eastern Star services to begin at 7 p.m.
